What are the guidelines and restrictions for this project?
This project is only open to currently enrolled students at the Ottoson Middle School in Arlington, MA. Only one piece of artwork will be accepted per student. The work you submit must be your original creation, and not limited in any way by copyright laws. Your work must also be appropriate for all viewing audiences. You must follow the category guidelines and submission instructions, below.
Category Guidelines
Visual Arts:
Visual arts categories include painting, drawing, illustration, collage, mixed media. The physical canvas should have dimensions of 6" x 6". All art submitted online should be in a square format, photographed or scanned at the highest resolution possible. If your image is not clear, we will be contacting you to follow up. All art that is submitted in-person at OMS will be photographed by our team.
Graphic and Digital Arts:
Graphic and digital arts categories include photography, digital art, graphic design, and calligraphy. The dimensions of your canvas should be 6" x 6." Any digital canvas should have a resolution of 300dpi. All art submitted online should be clearly photographed in a square format, with the highest resolution possible. If your image is not clear, we will be contacting you to follow up. All art that is submitted in-person at OMS will be photographed by our team.
Film and Video:
Any content in this category must be in MP4 format. Length: 1 minute or less. You can include a title at the beginning, but there is no need to include your name unless you want to.
Writing:
Writing categories include fiction, poetry, and essay--narrative or personal. Document should be Microsoft Word format, and length must be under 1000 words.
How do I submit my work?
Work may be submitted via our online portal or by delivering it to the folder that is located in the entryway, just inside the main doors at OMS. Every piece of art submitted must include a signed waiver/permission form and short 10-100 word artist statement, or it will not be accepted. The waiver/permission form is included in our submission portal.

How will my work be displayed?
All work will be displayed. All work submitted by the deadline will be shown on the project website, along with the artist’s first name and artist statement. Work will be presented on our website.
Some work selected by Ottoson Art Teachers, Polly Ford and Kayla McKenna, will be displayed in any or all the following:
Ottoson school website, Ottoson-related film or video presentations, and Ottoson School-associated social media accounts. A curated selection of art will also be reproduced as framed images and banners for display at Ottoson Middle School and in the community-at-large. At the end of the school year, the banners will remain on school property to be appreciated by future generations of Ottoson students. Additional recognitions or prizes may be announced at a future date.

Gibbs-Ottoson Diversity Inclusion Group parents (Kerry Abukhalaf, Mona Mandal), OMS Art Teachers(Polly Ford, Kayla McKenna) worked on the grant proposal for Arlington Education Foundation and are leading the effort.
